Deputies Assist Woman After She Gives Birth

Several Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputies happened upon a rare call in the early morning hours of Sept. 9, where they assisted a young woman who had just given birth to a baby girl in her car.

Jessica Garcia, 21, and her husband were driving to the hospital just after midnight on Monday. Garcia’s labor accelerated to the point where her husband had to pull over and help his wife deliver their daughter.

Sgt. Ben Martin of the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the area of NM 404 and Interstate 10 to assist the couple.

“In all of my 17 years of law enforcement, this has never happened,” Martin said, adding that he ensured the baby was breathing and helped to keep Garcia calm until an ambulance arrived. Martin enlisted the help of two other deputies on patrol to help control traffic and hold blankets and flashlights.

Garcia and her baby were taken to an area hospital. The baby is reportedly in good condition.
