El Paso Bishop: Preserve The DACA Program

El Paso Bishop Mark Seitz

The Trump Administration is considering ending a program that allows some children brought to the country illegally to stay here.

Ten State Attorneys General, led by Texas AG Ken Paxton, say if the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program…better known as DACA….is not cancelled by September fifth, it will face a challenge in federal court.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is asking the Trump administration to stop issuing DACA permits, including renewals for current DACA recipients.  That’s a personal threat for Jose Cabrera.  The Xavier University senior is in Ohio legally thanks to DACA.  He fought for the program, leading protests in the 2012 election.

El Paso Bishop Mark Seitz stands with Cabrera and other DACA recipients.  And he says it’s time for others to take action.

But Paxton and others contend…the law is the law.   Andy Hogue of the Travis County Republican party spoke to Austin’s KXAN-TV about the issue…saying DACA needs to end to allow Congress to vote on immigration issues.

Cabrera is trying to change views like that…speaking to everyone he can in the nation’s capitol.

For Bishop Seitz…this is not only a practical issue…strengthening our nation with new talent….it’s a moral one…another in a long list of civil rights struggles.
