El Paso Drug Ring Suspects Arrested

Almost two dozen members of a suspected El Paso drug ring, including some members of the Barrio Azteca gang, have been arrested.

Texas Department of Public Safety officials said Thursday the 23 arrests were made Wednesday and Thursday in the multi-agency operation. Two additional suspects are still sought.

DPS Regional Commander Carey Matthews says those arrested are suspected of being mid- to upper-level drug dealers involved in the sale of large amounts of cocaine and marijuana.

DPS officials say six of the suspects are confirmed members of the Barrio Azteca. Authorities say the drug ring is not believed to have direct ties to Mexican drug cartels, though the gang works on both sides of the border and has worked with the Juarez drug cartel.
