Former NM GOP Chairman Dies

The former leader of the Republican Party of New Mexico, John Dendahl, is being remembered for his competitive spirit and for boldly standing up for his convictions.

Dendahl's wife, Jackie, says her husband died Saturday in a Colorado hospital from complications from leukemia treatments. He was 75.

Current state GOP chairman John Billingsley says Dendahl was an advocate for conservative principals and was known for always standing up for what he believed was right.

Dendahl was born in Santa Fe in 1938. He graduated from the University of Colorado and was a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic ski team.

Dendahl served as secretary of the state Economic Development and Tourism Department and had an unsuccessful bid for governor in 1994. He served as the party's chairman for nearly a decade.
