Former Otero County Sheriff John Lee Dies

Alamogordo, New Mexico – ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (KRWG) Former Otero County Sheriff John "Johnny" Lee has died at his home in a small community east of Alamogordo.

Lee's brother says he was found by his wife when she returned home from work early Saturday. He was 58.

Alamogordo Municipal Court Judge Steven O. Lee tells the Alamogordo Daily News (http://bit.ly/xVeReQ ) that his brother apparently died of natural causes.

John Lee grew up in Alamogordo and served as a U.S. Marine in Vietnam after high school.

He began his law enforcement career with the Las Cruces police, then joined the sheriff's department as a reserve deputy and the New Mexico Department of Public Safety.

He soon rejoined the sheriff's department and eventually was elected sheriff, serving three terms before losing in a primary in 2010.
