Funding Increases Sought For Albuquerque Police Dept.

The Albuquerque Police Department would get a fiscal shot in the arm under a proposal by several City Council members.

Council President Dan Lewis and Councilors Isaac Benton and Don Harris say they want the city to provide the department with $2.4 million annually to recruit new officers and retained experienced ones.

The Albuquerque Journal  reports that about half the money would be used to provide a 1 percent pay increase. The rest would go to a program to retain senior officers and to attract recent college graduates to apply for new openings.

The councilors announced their proposal Sunday. It will be formally introduced next week and heard by Sept. 9 by a council committee.
