Gov. Martinez Makes Quick Trip To Mexico

Office of the Governor

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez made a quick trip to Mexico on Wednesday to celebrate the completion of a highway bypass project that officials hope will boost trade throughout the border region.

Martinez was a guest of Chihuahua Gov. Cesar Duarte. He and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto unveiled the $800 million project, which includes a 25-mile loop around the city of Chihuahua.

Officials hope the bypass will ease traffic and help the movement of goods between Mexico and New Mexico.

State officials say the project offers another piece to the puzzle as the region looks to attract more development.

In February, Martinez announced that 2014 was a record-breaking year of export growth in New Mexico. That included exports to Mexico, which reached an all-time high of $1.5 billion.
