The federal government is awarding grants of $1.9 million to three nonprofit groups for services to New Mexico veterans who are homeless or in jeopardy of losing their homes.
U.S. Sen. Tom Udall said the grants from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will help pay for a wide range of assistance, including for rent, utilities and moving expenses as well as transportation and child care.
About $1 million will go to Goodwill Industries of New Mexico to help veterans in 26 counties and on some tribal lands.
New Mexico Veterans Integration Centers was awarded $779,242 to serve veterans in eight counties.
Mesilla Valley Community of Hope will receive $114,369 for veterans and their families in Dona Ana County.
The grants are for the upcoming federal budget year.
