Groups To Sue New Mexico Over Latino Achievement Gap

A coalition of civil rights groups say they plan to sue the state of New Mexico for failing to close the achievement gap between Latino and white students.

The Latino Education Task Force is scheduled Sunday to announce the details of its challenge at a press conference at Albuquerque High School. The group says it has enlisted the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund to help.

New Mexico's League of United Latin American Citizens also is preparing its own legal action and plans to challenge New Mexico on state constitution mandates that require all students to receive equal education.

The moves come after Gov. Susan Martinez announced this week that educators from schools that recently received D or F grades can apply for new training.
