Guards, Inmates Fight In San Juan County Jail

Inmates and guards at a county jail in northwestern New Mexico were involved in a fight over the weekend.

Lt. Cory Tanner with the San Juan County Sheriff's Office says the fight started Sunday morning when three guards tried to return three inmates to their cells. The inmates had been cleaning a bathroom after a fight that occurred earlier Sunday.

Tanner says the guards left the bathroom and dozens of other inmates then became unruly and refused to go into their cells.

He says guards were able to get the situation under control after about an hour.

The Sheriff's Office says a guard suffered a fractured eye socket and that other guards had minor injuries.

Some inmates will face new charges as a result of the fight.
