From a Hearse to a Park Bench - 100 Years of Volunteer Service

General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC)

March 20, 2015 – Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, Emily Guerra bridges the community with the President of General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) Progress Club of Las Cruces, Valerie Redington; and GFWC Progress Club Centennial Committee Chair, Rebecca Courtney. This year the club celebrates 100th Anniversary of service to our community. Their motto is “Living the Volunteer Spirit.”

In 1915, a group of women united with GFWC in Washington, D.C. and formed the GFWC Progress Club of Las Cruces. The City of Las Cruces recently proclaimed April as “GFWC Progress Club of Las Cruces Month” to honor their 100 years of volunteer service. Several events in April are scheduled in celebration of their Centennial, beginning April 3rd at the Branigan Cultural Center (BCC) highlighting the club’s commitments and contributions; along with an Ice Cream Social from 5-7 p.m. Then on April 11th the Progress Club will donate a park bench to Las Cruces in Pioneer Women’s Park, with a picnic from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. A presentation of the history of GFWC will be held at 2:30 p.m. at BCC. On April 18th the Progress Club Fashion Show will take place at Hotel Encanto from 11a.m.-2 p.m. to provide scholarships to NMSU students. More information about GFWC is available at www.gfwc.org.
