Hit And Run Arrest

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – Las Cruces Police arrested a woman responsible for a hit-and-run crash and another who called 911 and falsely claimed the vehicle was stolen.

Angelita B. Trillo, 19, of the 700 block of Baca Road, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, driving without a license, driving without insurance, driving with expired registration or plates, and three other traffic violations.

Veronica Martinez, 22, of the 800 block of Baca Road, is charged with one count of falsifying a police report. Martinez also had a municipal court warrant for her arrest.

At around 9:20 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, police were called to the 700 block of Del Monte Street after a woman driving a white Chevrolet pickup struck a cinder block wall and then drove away. The pickup then hit a vehicle parked on Del Monte before the driver abandoned it at 1880 E. Lohman Ave. and left the area on foot.

While officers were investigating the crash, Trillo came back to the scene and disclosed that she was the driver.

A short while later, Martinez called 911 and reported that her white Chevrolet pickup had been stolen. When informed that Trillo was in custody, Martinez told officers she fabricated the stolen vehicle story in an attempt to keep Trillo from getting into trouble.

Trillo was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $3,500. Bond for Martinez was set at $4,164.
