I-35 Closed For Two Hours After Standoff With Veteran

A portion of Interstate 35 south of Waco was closed for about two hours as authorities negotiated with a veteran who threatened to harm himself.

Officials closed the interstate and access roads near the small town of Lorena on Saturday morning until the man surrendered.

Lorena Police Chief Tom Dickson says the 38-year-old man parked alongside the interstate said he wanted to walk into traffic or wanted police to kill him. The man also covered a shiny object, later identified as car molding, with his sleeve and held it to his head.

After surrendering, he told officers he had run out of gas while trying to get to the Veterans Administration hospital in Temple. Police confirmed he was a veteran and took him to the hospital.
