Judge Reduces Verdict Against Carmaker In Toddler's Death

A carmaker has been ordered to pay more than $8 million after a toddler suffered brain damage after getting her head stuck in a power window.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that on Friday U.S. District Judge Kenneth Gonzales reduced a jury's $9.6 million verdict by $1 million, but denied a new trial or a judgment as a matter of law requested by Volvo Cars of North America.

The jury heard two weeks of testimony about the September 2010 incident in which 2-year-old Alana Rivera was able to roll up the window of her father's 2001 Volvo, closing it on her neck and depriving her of oxygen. The jury based the judgment on Alana's lost future wages.

Volvo said the blame was entirely on the father, who was asleep in the car.
