La Catrina String Quartet In Free Concert At NMSU Wednesday

New Mexico State University’s La Catrina String Quartet will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at the Atkinson Recital Hall on campus. Guest artist Jim Shearer, an NMSU professor of music, will accompany the group on tuba.

The Grammy Award winning quartet in residence in NMSU’s College of Arts and Sciences, was recently nominated for a second Grammy Award. The ensemble includes violinist Daniel Vega-Albela, Jorge Martinez-Rios on viola, violinist Roberta Arruda and cellist Jorge Espinoza. All are assistant professors in the music department.

The concert will include performances of works by Mozart, Yalil Guerra, Manny Albam and Piazzolla.

“Don't miss the opportunity to hear the intimacy of chamber music in Las Cruces,” Martinez-Rios said. “It'll be a first rate concert!”

This is one of two concerts La Catrina will present for the Las Cruces community. During the concert they will also perform two movements from the Sholstakovich String Quartet No. 8, featuring advanced NMSU music students from the strings area.

The event is free and open to the public.
