Supporters of the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument came out in force Tuesday at the Dona Ana County Commission meeting. Some 300 people attended the five-hour meeting. Most expressed support for the monument, which is under review by the Interior Department, along with 26 other areas.
The commission voted 4-1 to support the monument and oppose reducing its size. Commissioner Ben Rawson was the lone vote against the measure. Rep. Steve Pearce (R-NM 2) has asked the Department to dramatically reduce the size of the monument from about 500,000 acres to around 60,000 acres.
