Las Cruces Arrest Leads To Charges In Other Incident

A Saturday morning call that led to the arrest of a man suspected of breaking into an apartment and physically assaulting a couple also resulted in the arrest of a woman on forgery charges.

Las Cruces Police detectives learned that at around 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, Olajuwon Herrera, 24, kicked in the door to a couple’s apartment at 805 E. Foster Rd. and began demanding that they pay $20 allegedly owed to him. Herrera is then suspected of kicking both victims – then 31-year-old Jennifer Young and her boyfriend – and threatening to cause further harm if they didn’t comply with his demand.

A neighbor called 911 and police were able to detain Herrera as he ran from the scene.

While investigating that incident, Las Cruces Police officers discovered a driver’s license, Social Security card and other personal information belonging to another woman. Officers made contact with that woman who advised that her vehicle had been broken into and burglarized earlier Saturday morning.

Las Cruces Police Detectives subsequently found video footage that is believed to depict Young using a credit card belonging to another woman at a local Walmart store. The credit card belonged to the same woman whose driver’s license and Social Security card were found at Young’s residence.

Herrera, 24, was charged with aggravated burglary, attempted robbery, resisting and obstructing, and carrying of a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $25,000.

Young was charged with one count each of forgery and fraudulent use of a credit card. Bond for Young was set at $5,000.
