Las Cruces Casting Call For Major Film Draws Nearly 1,000

Over the Labor Day weekend, nearly 1,000 people responded to an open casting call for the recently retitled major feature film, “The Space Between Us” (formerly “Out Of This World”).  The Mesilla Valley Mall hosted hundreds who traveled from Juarez, Mexico, Boulder, CO, San Antonio, TX and the Los Angeles area, in addition to residents from the Las Cruces and El Paso area.

Men, women and children of all races were invited to the casting call. The science fiction film is about a young man raised by scientists on Mars who returns to Earth to find his father. The film, which stars Gary Oldman and other major motion picture luminaries, begins shooting in later this month.

Gary Camarano, Economic Development Coordinator for the City of Las Cruces, expressed that “The energy and excitement among all of the people, who in many cases traveled considerable distances to take advantage of the opportunity to be cast in a major motion picture, was quite evident. The mall court area devoted to the casting event was teeming with people for hours on both of the days scheduled for the casting call.”

Elizabeth Gabel, Casting Director for the production, added that “Las Cruces was definitely the right choice for conducting an open casting call.  The City’s Film Office did a great job of helping us to secure the mall as the venue for the event and very rapidly got the word out quite effectively.  We were delighted at receiving as many respondents to the open casting call as we did.”
