Commentary:  On Saturday, June 18th, multi-faith leaders and clergy from NM Comunidades en Accion y de Fe (CAFé) will host an event educating people of faith and the community about private prisons and the issues affecting returning citizens in Doña Ana County. For the last few months multi-faith leaders with NM CAFé have been exploring criminal justice issues in our community through conversations with our brothers and sisters who are returning to our community from prison or jail as well as with community advocates and experts.

Daisy Maldonado, Islamic Center of Las Cruces, reminds us, “As people of faith we are called to know our neighbors and care for our community's most vulnerable. As people of faith we are called to welcome our brothers and sisters who are returning from prison back fully into our communities. This calling means we must welcome returning citizens into our places of worship, with employment opportunities, housing, and all the community and social support they need to thrive.”

Faith leaders invite you to join them on Saturday, June 18th from 2:00p.m.-4:00 p.m. to learn about their recent work around incarceration and criminal justice issues in Doña Ana County. Leaders will share testimony, and explain why as people of faith we are called to oppose private prisons, support alternatives to incarceration, and support services for people re-entering our community.
