Las Cruces Girl Leads Deputies On Pursuit After Alleged Shoplifting Spree

A 17-year-old Las Cruces girl was arrested Tuesday after she and two teenage friends allegedly went on a shoplifting spree and then fled from a Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputy who tried to stop her for running a stop sign.

According to a criminal complaint, Sandra Becerra took her uncle’s 2004 Chevrolet Blazer without permission Tuesday morning and picked up two female friends, 16- and 14-years-old.  Becerra reportedly drove to Mesilla Valley Mall where the trio allegedly stole clothing, makeup and hair accessories.

Sheriff’s detectives learned the girls left the mall and went to another Las Cruces department store where they allegedly shoplifted more clothing.

Becerra was reportedly driving her friends home when she ran a stop sign at the intersection of Spitz and El Camino Real. A Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputy who observed the traffic violation engaged his lights and sirens and attempted to pull Becerra over, but she refused to stop, leading the deputy on a high-speed chase.

Additional units were called to the area to deploy a tire deflation device, which was successful in bringing Becerra’s vehicle to a stop near Elks Drive.

Becerra is charged with two counts of child abuse, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing, three counts of shoplifting and driving without a license. She’s being held at the Doña Ana County Juvenile Detention Center without bond.
