Las Cruces Man Charged With Beating Ex-Girlfriend

Police arrested a Las Cruces man suspected of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment and beating herSaturday evening.

Stephen Brandon Guthrie, 28, of 1401 Alamo Street, is charged with one count each of battery against a household member, false imprisonment, breaking and entering, criminal damage to property, and resisting or evading an officer.

Las Cruces Police were dispatched at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, July 19, to the report of a possible domestic incident at the woman’s apartment, on the 1900 block of north Solano Drive. The 26-year-old woman told officers that Guthrie, her ex-boyfriend, broke into the apartment and demanded that she hand over her cell phone.

When the woman refused his demands Guthrie is alleged to have pushed the woman to the floor, got on top of her and began punching her face. Guthrie then took the phone away from the woman and allegedly made a threatening call to a male friend of the victim.

Officers made contact with Guthrie at his residence but the suspect initially identified himself under a different name. Guthrie subsequently ran away and tried to elude officers who apprehended the suspect after a short foot pursuit on Foster Road.

Guthrie was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $5,000. He has since posted bail.
