Las Cruces Man Suspected in Friday Shooting Charged with Attempted Murder

The man suspected in Friday’s shots-fired call off Hoagland Road has been charged with attempted murder.

Isaiah R. O’Kelley, 21, of the 1800 block of Flora Circle, is charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, June 15, Las Cruces police were dispatched to the report of shots fired near Hoagland Road and Windsor Place. Officers arrived to find multiple shell casings on the ground, and damage to a vehicle and residence caused by gunfire. A resident received a relatively minor injury to a shin when he hid behind a pickup as shots were fired.

Investigators learned that a nearby resident was hosting a party and a neighbor confronted some of the partygoers for their loud behavior. One of the partygoers, subsequently identified as O’Kelley, brandished a handgun and pointed it at the neighbor as the two argued.

Investigators learned the neighbor used his cell phone to simultaneously call 911 and take photos of the armed suspect. The suspect got into a vehicle but continued to threaten the victim.

The neighbor told investigators he threw landscaping blocks toward the suspect’s vehicle and the suspect fired multiple rounds toward him as the car drove away. The victim hid behind a nearby pickup as the shots were fired.

Investigators located 12 spent shell casings from the scene and bullet strikes to the pickup and the exterior wall of a residence on Briarwood Lane. Investigators reviewed the photos taken by the victim and used them to identify O’Kelley as the suspect.

Las Cruces police arrested O’Kelley on a bench warrant out of District Court on Monday, June 18. He has since been charged for the shooting and is currently being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
