Las Cruces Man Suspected of Strangling, Injuring Ex-girlfriend

Police arrested a Las Cruces man suspected of strangling his ex-girlfriend during a heated argument Monday afternoon.

Andres Borrego, 28, of the 300 block of east Union Avenue, is charged with one count of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.

Las Cruces Police investigators learned that Borrego was having drinks with his ex-girlfriend when they got into an argument at a local brewery. They left and went to his apartment where the argument allegedly became physical.

At the apartment, Borrego is suspected of overpowering the 22-year-old woman and strangling her until she lost consciousness. The woman indicated to investigators that she was unconscious for some time and regained consciousness when Borrego slapped her.

The woman left the apartment and sought help from a friend, and subsequently from police. She had obvious signs of injury consistent with being choked in the manner she described.

Borrego was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he’s initially being held without bond.
