Las Cruces – Residents interested in gaining insight into life behind the badge are invited to apply for the Las Cruces Police Department's training academy for citizens that will begin April 23, 2011.
The academy for citizens will offer training in use of force, crime scene investigations, gangs, the K-9 unit, crisis intervention, neighborhood enforcement, animal control, codes enforcement and community policing. The academy, open to residents of Las Cruces who are 18-years and older, will be held on four consecutive Saturdays beginning April 23.
The free academy will be limited to 20 students. Minor background checks will be conducted on all applicants and successful candidates will be obligated to attend all four sessions. The four sessions will run from 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday and will be held at the LCPD Training Academy in central Las Cruces.
Applications are available at the Las Cruces Police Department, 217 E. Picacho Ave. The deadline to submit applications is noon on Friday, April 8.
