The Las Cruces Police Department and the city's school district have suspended student ride-alongs following the arrest of a veteran detective on sexual assault charges. Administrators from both agencies said the "Excel program" would stop indefinitely. They said they planned to review — and possibly revise — related policies.
Last week, Las Cruces police detective Michael Garcia resigned just days after he was arrested on charges that he had sex inside his unmarked police with a teenage girl believed to be 17 years old.
The 37-year-old was charged with one count each of criminal sexual penetration of a minor and criminal sexual contact of a minor.
It was not known if he had an attorney.
