Las Cruces Police Issue 65 Tickets On Lohman In Morning Operation

Las Cruces Police issued 65 traffic citations in two hours during a special operation held Thursday morning.

Of the 65 citations, 19 went to drivers who made an improper right turn from Foothills Road onto eastbound Lohman Avenue. The violation occurs when the driver fails to maintain the immediate first lane of traffic after a turn.

Another 16 citations were issued to drivers who were in violation of the city’s cell phone ordinance, the law that bans cell phone use while driving within city limits.

Nine motorists received citations for not having proof of liability insurance, six for not properly using a seat belt, four for running a red light and four for not having a valid driver’s license. The remaining seven citations were for miscellaneous violations.

Officers also arrested one driver who was found to have outstanding warrants.

The city’s cell phone ordinance prohibits engaging in a phone call or creating, sending and reading text messages or e-mail, or otherwise manipulating an electronic device while operating a motor vehicle. A citation for the infraction carries a $92 fine.

Engaging in a conversation on a cell phone is permitted within city limits only if the driver is utilizing a hands-free device and its use does not interfere with the safe operation of the vehicle.

Thursday’s traffic operation was from 8-10 a.m. near the intersection of Lohman Avenue and Foothills Road. The Las Cruces Police Department’s Traffic Unit says it will conduct similar operations in the near future.
