Las Cruces Police: ‘ReportIt’ Stores Important Info to help ID Valuables

The Las Cruces Police Department is encouraging residents to utilize a free online system that allows them to inventory personal valuables and store important information in a database that can be used anywhere in the country to report lost or stolen property to police or insurance companies.

ReportIt is an online system that lets people securely store serial numbers, item descriptions, pictures of valuables and scans so property can be easily reported to police or insurance in the event of loss, theft or emergency. Up to 100 items of value can be stored for free on the ReportIt site.

In the event an item is lost or stolen, residents can easily access their ReportIt account to provide police or insurance with photos, serial numbers or other important information. The service is particularly helpful to travelers who otherwise would not have immediate access to the data. Law enforcement is unable to view items stored in ReportIt as the accounts are only accessible by the registrar.

Some examples of the usefulness of ReportIt might include:

Example: A Las Cruces woman, on business in San Diego, loses a unique and valuable ring. When reporting the loss to San Diego police, she logs into her ReportIt account to provide police with photos of the ring. Police match the photos with a ring found at an area restaurant.

Example: An El Paso woman is in Las Cruces when her laptop computer is stolen. She logs into ReportIt to retrieve its serial number. Police enter the serial number into NCIC and quickly discover that the laptop was sold at a local pawn shop. The laptop is recovered and returned to the woman.

Example: A Houston couple is visiting Las Cruces for the summer with their young daughter. They wish to register their daughter in a summer camp but need a copy of her birth certificate. The couple logs into their ReportIt account where they stored a scan of the girl’s birth certificate.

Example: A Denver man traveling through Las Cruces accidentally leaves a handgun in a hotel room. In order to positively identify the gun, he logs into his ReportIt account to retrieve its serial number.

Example: A Las Cruces couple’s home catches fire and burns to the ground. All their material possessions are lost in the fire. In order to document the loss with their insurance carrier, they log into ReportIt and download a list of valuables they stored on the site.
