Las Cruces School Board Candidates Must File Tuesday

LAS CRUCES---Any registered voter who plans to run for the Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education must file a declaration of candidacy between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 20.  School district officials said this is the only day that residents can file their candidacy.

Jo Galvan, LCPS chief communications officer, said there will be three Board seats on the Feb. 7, 2017 election ballot: District 1, currently held by Chuck Davis; District 2, currently held by Barbara Hall; and District 3, currently held by Maria A. Flores.  Davis and Hall have announced they will not run for re-election while Flores announced she will seek another term.  The term is for four years beginning March 1, 2017.

“Serving on the School Board is very important to the future of the school district,” Galvan said.  “Board members are responsible for formulating all the policies that govern the entire school system, they approve the district’s budget and they employ the one person who reports directly to them — the superintendent.”

In order to qualify as a candidate, the person must be a registered voter and live within the School Board district they would represent, Galvan said.  The candidate must fill out a Declaration of Candidacy form which is available on the LCPS website (www.lcps.k12.nm.us) or at the Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office.  The form must be notarized, which can also be obtained at the county clerk’s office, Galvan added.

Residents can read through the district’s policies that relate to the Board’s qualifications, powers and responsibilities, code of ethics, various types of Board meetings and other policies, at this webpage: http://lcps.k12.nm.us/school-board/policies-and-regulations/section-b-school-board-governance-and-operations/.
