Las Cruces Teacher Wins Golden Apple Award

LAS CRUCES--- Based on the quality of her teaching, demonstrated commitment to the profession of teaching and continued professional growth, Melody Hagaman, a computer science teacher at Centennial High School, was one of only seven high school teachers across New Mexico to be named a recipient of the 2017 Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence by the Golden Apple Foundation of New Mexico (GAFNM).

“Melody’s work as an educator has inspired countless students throughout Las Cruces, and we are honored that she continues to share her passion for, and expertise in, computer science with the community at-large,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Steven Sanchez.

As part of the award, Hagaman will receive a cash stipend, $4,000 to support her personalized professional development plan, induction into the Golden Apple Academy of Fellows, and recognition at the Golden Apple Tribute to a Techer Excellence Luncheon, Friday, April 7, 2017 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Albuquerque.

“One of the great lessons of this process is that excellent teaching is happening everywhere in New Mexico,” said GAFNM Director Brian O’Connell. “There are many more amazing teachers in our state than people commonly understand.  Having said that, these Golden Apple recipients and Teachers of Distinction are truly exceptional.  The impacts they have on their students and their communities are profound.”

Hagaman was the only finalist from Las Cruces and one of only 16 finalists for this year’s awards program. This year’s awards program received 107 nominations from 22 different cities throughout New Mexico.

To be considered for the award, Hagaman had to be nominated by a community member and then complete an extensive application, which was judged by a committee of past award recipients, members of the GAFNM Board of Directors and other experienced educators.

As a finalist, Hagaman had to undergo a 90-minute classroom observation by three members of the GAFNM selection committee, who also interviewed Hagaman’s fellow teachers, principals, parents and students.

GAFNM was founded in 1994 as a way to improve the quality of education across New Mexico through the recognition, recruitment and professional development of outstanding teachers. The Golden Apple Excellence in Teaching Awards program has recognized 123 teachers throughout New Mexico since the program began in 1996.

Hagaman was also recently named the first runner-up for the 2016 Las Cruces Public Schools Teacher of the Year Award.
