Las Cruces Woman Arrested In Rape Of 12-Year-Old Boy

Las Cruces – Las Cruces Police have arrested a 19-year-old woman after it was discovered that she had a sexual relationship with a 12-year-old boy.

Melanie Maya Freeman, 19, of the 1900 block of Avenida de Mesilla, is charged with one count each of criminal sexual penetration of a minor, a first-degree felony, and battery on a peace officer. Freeman also had two outstanding municipal warrants for her arrest.

At around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20, a Las Cruces Police officer went to Freeman's home in an attempt to serve two outstanding municipal warrants. The officer was greeted at the door by a relative of the woman and was told that Freeman was in an upstairs bedroom. Freeman refused repeated orders to leave the room so officers entered and found Freeman in bed with the boy.

As police were escorting Freeman to a patrol car the woman struck one of the officers with a raised knee. The officer was not seriously injured.

Detectives learned that Freeman and the boy, whose families are acquainted, had engaged in sexual relations on the previous evening.

Freeman is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $55,000.
