Las Cruces Woman Says She Woke Up To Find A Stranger In Her Home

Las Cruces Police arrested a man suspected of breaking into a 26-year-old woman’s apartment while she slept.

Luis Albert Mejia, 40, whose address is listed in Eloy, Ariz., is charged with one fourth-degree felony count of breaking and entering.

Las Cruces Police detectives learned that the woman returned to her apartment on the 900 block of north Tornillo Street at around 12 a.m. Saturday, July 7. As the woman walked toward her apartment she was greeted by a man, later identified as Mejia, who was sitting on a vehicle in the parking lot.

The woman told detectives that she entered her apartment, locked all the windows and doors, and fell asleep on the living room sofa. At around 5 a.m. the woman awoke, and was startled to find Mejia sitting nearby on the floor and staring at her.

The woman ordered Mejia to leave the residence which he did, reluctantly. The woman was not physically injured.

Evidence from the scene suggests that Mejia entered the woman’s apartment through a bedroom window which was found slightly ajar.

Mejia was located at his relative’s residence which is nearby. He was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $10,000.
