Lawmaker Proposes Bill On Replacing Navajo Speaker

Newly proposed Navajo Nation Council legislation would set up a process for appointing a replacement for Speaker Johnny Naize if he is removed from office.

The Daily Times reports that the bill on appointing a replacement is sponsored by council Delegate Alton Joe Shepherd. He's also sponsoring legislation calling for the removal of Naize because of pending criminal charges related to use of tribal discretional money.

The replacement bill refers to Navajo law that mandates that the replacement speaker be chosen by the council from among its members to serve the remainder of the term.

The posting of the bill on Monday starts a public comment period that allows it to be eligible for committee action after Jan. 18.
