Lawmaker Wants Radioactive Waste Documents Released

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A lawmaker says he wants documents relating to an application to bury radioactive waste in West Texas to be revealed publicly.

State Rep. Lon Burnam, D-Fort Worth, has called a news conference for Monday to ask Attorney General Greg Abbott whether documents detailing the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality's concerns with the application from Waste Control Specialists can be released. Burnam says he is prohibited from sharing the documents publicly under a confidentially agreement signed in September 2009 at the insistence of the TCEQ.

Burnam says he also will call on the TCEQ to prevent the West Texas site from becoming operational until safety can be guaranteed. TCEQ spokesman Terry Clawson said the agency believes "the license is and will be protective of human health and the environment."
