Lawyer: Report On Erased Emails Could Clear Client

A former Sunland Park mayor-elect's lawyer says new evidence stemming from a report on emails reportedly erased by a prosecutor's office could clear the lawyer's client.

Daniel Salinas won a 2012 mayoral race but was prevented from taking office after he was charged with extortion for allegedly secretly recording his opponent receiving a lap dance from a topless woman.

Salinas awaits trial on charges of extortion and other crimes, but a judge on Monday granted a three-month extension.

Defense attorney Joshua Spencer declined to provide specifics but said the new evidence is in recently discovered emails in the District Attorney's Office.

District Attorney Mark D'Antonio last week released a report that said politically sensitive emails were deleted before he took office.
