SILVER CITY, N.M. – Forest officials say crews have responded to 14 fires ranging in size from a spot to four acres. Most of the fires were held to less than one-tenth of an acre.
Two of the fires burning in wilderness areas were being monitored Monday. Officials say they made the decision not to fight the fires due to recent precipitation, limited fuels and little fire growth.
Meanwhile, crews were busy trying to contain two more lightning-caused fires in the forest. One is burning southwest of Gila Hot Springs and the other is southwest of Glenwood.
Gila officials say stage II fire restrictions remain in place across the forest.
