Primary Election results are in throughout Southern New Mexico, and the unofficial results in contested races are in.
First looking at the state legislature:
In the District 36 Democratic State Senate Race, Jeff Steinborn defeated Oscar Vasquez Butler with 65% of the vote, and will take on GOP incumbent Lee Cotter in November.
In the three-way race for State Representative for District 34, Bealquin Bill Gomez defeated opponents Paul Maxwell and Raymundo Lara with 45% of the vote.
In District 35’s Democratic Primary, Angelica Rubio defeated opponents Paul Martinez and Ray Jaramillo with 45% of the vote, and will take on Republican Joseph Bishop in November.
Candice Sweetser defeated Frederick Sherman in in the Democratic Primary Race for State Representative for District 32 with 57% of the vote. She will face Vicki Chavez in November, who barely defeated J. Scott Chandler by 12 votes in the District 32 Republican Primary.
In District 38, Democrat Mary Hotvedt defeated Karen Whitlock won in a close race over Karen Whitlock by just 31 votes. Hotvedt moves on to face Republican Rebecca Dow who defeated Daniel Galindo in the republican primary with 75% of the vote.
In the Dona Ana County Commission races, incumbents were unseated:
Ramon Gonzalez defeated incumbent David Garcia in the democratic primary for District 2 with 60% of the vote.
Wayne Hancock was also the unseated in his democratic primary race for District 4 by Isabela Solis taking 45% of the vote; David L. Bonner also was in the race taking just 10% of the vote.
Solis will face off against Republican William Webb who defeated his opponent in the Republican race for District 4 with 68% of the vote.
The District 5 seat being vacated by Leticia Benavides will see Democrat John Vasquez take on Republican Kimberly Hakes.
John Vasquez defeated his opponents Bill Standridge and Dickie Apodaca taking 42% of the vote.
Republican Kimberly Hakes defeated Craig Buckingham with 58% of the vote.
Also in Dona Ana County:
Incumbent Dona Ana County District Attorney Mark D’Antonio defeated his Democratic opponent James Dickens coming in with 59% of the vote. D'Antonio moves on to face Republican C. Lane Brad Cates in November.
In the three-way race in the Democratic Primary for the Dona Ana County Treasurer seat, Eric Rodriguez won a close race against Eugenia Montoya Ortega and Shannon Reynolds coming in with 35% of the vote.
In the Grant County Commission Primaries:
Alicia Edwards defeated Ralph Dominguez in the Democratic Primary for District 3 with 65% of the vote, and will face Republican Henry Torres in November.
In the four-way race for the Democratic Primary in District 4, Marilyn Jean Alcorn defeated Antonio Trujillo, James McCauley, and Jeremiah Garcia with 43% of the vote.
Harry Francis Browne took the three-way race in the Democratic Primary in District 5 with 55% of the vote defeating Simon Ortiz and Stephen Edwards
