Long Range Transportation Plan Input Sought In Las Cruces

The future of roads, streets and trails is the subject of upcoming meetings specifically asking for public input from residents of Las Cruces and surrounding areas so they have an opportunity to make an impact on planning decisions.

“This is a really good chance for area residents to share their thoughts and ideas with us during the planning phase of the Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP),” said Tom Murphy, officer of the Mesilla Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). MPO is a multi-jurisdictional agency responsible for the transportation planning in Las Cruces, the Town of Mesilla and parts of Doña Ana County. The agency, housed with the City of Las Cruces, is responsible for planning all aspects of the transportation system in the region, including thoroughfares, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, public transit and the airport.

Murphy explained that the LRTP, known as Transport 2040, provides a framework that helps establish yearly project priorities in cooperation with the New Mexico Department of Transportation in allocating federal and state transportation funds.

The meetings will provide mapping and writing activities for participants; however, if anyone is unable to attend the meetings they may share their comments by email at mpo@las-cruces.org.More information about Transport 2040 can be found on the internet at http://mvmpo.las-cruces.org.

Murphy said he and his staff are available as guest speakers for organizations whose membership wants to know more information. Scheduling may be arranged by calling 575-528-3222.
