Local artist Haydee Alonso has launched a Community Art Project to give a voice and creative platform for families struggling with immigration issues to share their culture and experiences.
Artwork from her workshops with ICE detainees from Otero County Prison and La Mujer Obrera youth will be on display Aug. 10 at Centro De Los Trabajadores Agricolas Fronterizos. The exhibition raises awareness of the immigrants’ hardships and their journey to find a better life.
“MAGA: Doors Not Walls offers a creative outlet for first generation immigrant children and solidarity to ICE detainees. With our current administration, immigration is a heavily disputed topic, and it's important to raise awareness of the laws that lead to family separation and arbitrary treatment of human beings,” MAGA founder Haydee Alonso said. “I understand that these laws, as antiquated as they may be, must be followed, but I want people to understand that there is a human side to all of this. These are fathers, mothers and grandparents in distress, seeking better opportunities for themselves and their loved ones.”
