A man who attacked an elderly Las Cruces couple with a hammer and burglarized their home has been sentenced to 34 ½ years in prison.
The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that 43-year-old Guy Young was sentenced Monday, more than a year after he attacked Patsy and Charles Green at their Las Cruces home. Court documents say Young hit them each twice in the head with a hammer and took their pickup and hundreds of dollars in cash.
The Hobbs man was originally charged with attempted murder, but prosecutors dropped that charge, citing a lack of evidence. Young instead pleaded guilty to several charges, including battery with a deadly weapon.
Young and his attorney asked for a reduced sentence of 20 years. They said Young had a troubled childhood that adversely shaped his life.
