Man Suspected of Stabbing Friend during Fight in Las Cruces

Las Cruces police arrested a man suspected of stabbing a friend during an physical confrontation Saturday evening.

Isaac Avalos, 23, is charged with one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The charge is a third-degree felony.

Las Cruces police investigators learned that Avalos was at a friend’s house, on the 1900 block of Wyoming Avenue, Saturday evening. Investigators learned that Avalos and his friend were in the backyard. At some point, Avalos went into the kitchen looking for beer, but could not find any. Avalos reported became upset when he learned they already drank all the beer.

Investigators learned that Avalos and the friend began arguing before the confrontation became physical. After a few minutes of fighting, Avalos allegedly grabbed a large kitchen knife and started swinging it back and forth at his friend.

The friend received multiple stab wounds and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His injuries were not life-threatening.

Avalos left the apartment but was located by police later Saturday evening. He was arrested and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he’s initially being held without bond.
