Man Who Caused Las Cruces Bomb Scare Facing Felony Charge

A man who Las Cruces police say walked into an office supplies store and purported to have a bag with explosives is facing charges.

Las Cruces police said Thursday that 44-year-old Robert Schaffer has been charged with a felony count of intentionally delivering a facsimile or hoax bomb.

Schaffer is being held in Dona Ana County Detention Center without bond.

It was not immediately known if he had attorney.

Police say Schaffer allegedly entered a Staples store Wednesday evening and handed a bag to an employee, indicating there was a bomb inside.

Responding officers detained Schaffer and evacuated the store as well as nearby businesses.

A bomb squad determined the bag did not have an explosive device.

Authorities believe Schaffer is homeless.
