Martinez Announces $5.5 Million In State Funds For Albuquerque Company Adding High-Tech Jobs

Office of the Governor

Albuquerque, NM — Today, Governor Susana Martinez announced that Skorpios Technologies Inc., a high-tech manufacturer of photonic integrated circuits, will expand in Albuquerque and create up to 300 jobs over the next few years. These positions include high-tech engineering and manufacturing roles, with an average salary of more than $60,000, and ranging all the way up to $150,000.

“Building New Mexico into a high-tech jobs leader is a cornerstone of our efforts to grow and diversify our economy,” said Governor Susana Martinez. “That’s why we continue to do all we can to make New Mexico more competitive and business friendly – because it shows results by creating jobs for our families and communities.”

Skorpios will receive $5.5 million from the state in Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) funding for infrastructure at the company’s new permanent facility in Albuquerque to expand its research and development, test and assembly operations.

“All of us at Skorpios would like to thank Governor Martinez, Secretary Barela and Mayor Berry for their outstanding support as we take the next step in the evolution of Skorpios,” said Stephen Krasulick, CEO and founder of Skorpios Technologies. “We are thrilled to continue the expansion of our business in Albuquerque, and look forward to collaborating with the State and City to create opportunities that benefit the community and our company.”

LEDA is New Mexico's closing fund and is a valuable resource to help recruit new businesses to New Mexico and help those that are already here grow and thrive. During this summer's special legislative session, Governor Martinez fought to grow the closing fund to $50 million, up from nearly zero when she took office. Growing the closing fund is a key component of the Governor's initiatives to make New Mexico more business friendly and competitive with surrounding states.

“Skorpios is a locally grown firm with the technology and expertise to be a game changer in the telecommunications and data communications industry, and we are proud they chose to keep their business in New Mexico,” said Economic Development Secretary Jon Barela. “The high-tech sector is a particular focus of growth for the Martinez Administration and we are pleased to partner with Skorpios to grow this enterprise and create good jobs.”

The City of Albuquerque will also contribute $1.5 million in LEDA to help with infrastructure. LEDA from the city and state was key to help keep Skorpios in New Mexico.

“The success of Skorpios is a testament to the strong and expanding tech-sector in Albuquerque and New Mexico,” said Mayor Richard J. Berry. “I know I speak for the entire community when I say we are excited to see what is next for Skorpios, and applaud them for paving the way for other successful tech firms to expand in our region.”

Additionally, Skorpios says it decided to expand its operations in New Mexico because of the state’s high quality of life and deep talent pool of workers experienced in hardware development and physical sciences, thanks to the state’s national laboratories and other high-tech companies. The company’s products are used for networking, data, fiber-optic, telecommunications, and many other applications.
