Gov. Susana Martinez has appointed Deming lawyer Jarod Hofacket to a judgeship in southern New Mexico.
Martinez announced the appointment on Friday.
Hofacket at least temporarily fills a vacancy created by the retirement of District Judge Gary Jeffreys in the 6th Judicial District of Grant, Hidalgo and Luna counties. However, the winner of the general election will end up serving on the court.
Hofacket is among two Republicans seeking their party's nomination in the primary election. Two Democrats also are running for the judgeship.
Hofacket earned his law degree from Texas Tech University.
The Republican governor made her selection from four nominees recommended by an independent commission. Martinez had asked the nominating commission to send her more names after it initially recommended one candidate.
