New Mexico – Gov. Susana Martinez is urging the New Mexico legislature to enact what's she's calling significant anti-corruption legislation.
The Republican governor's office says she plans a noon press conference in Albuquerque on Sunday with a bipartisan group of lawmakers to drum up support for her proposals.
Martinez is supporting a series of reforms that include requiring legislators to go through a "cooling-off" period after leaving office before becoming lobbyists.
Other new provisions she wants include requiring immediate removal from office and pension forfeiture for public officials convicted of corruption. A conviction would also lead to a ban on doing business with the state.
Martinez also wants to prevent taxpayers from paying a public official's legal bills when the state is seeking restitution for corrupt behavior.
