An official in the Mexican border state of Tamaulipas has resigned three weeks after U.S. prosecutors said over $1.1 million found in his Texas bank account was linked to bribes.
Homero de la Garza Tamez said Tuesday that he resigned as Tamaulipas' social development secretary to take care of personal affairs, including the U.S. civil forfeiture suit seeking confiscation of the funds.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas alleges the funds were bribes or kickbacks that De la Garza Tamez received during his previous post at a state housing and urban development agency.
Tomas Yarrington is also wanted in the United States on charges of racketeering and money laundering, for allegedly taking bribes from the Gulf Cartel when he was Tamaulipas governor from 1999 to 2004.
