New Exhibit Opening At NMSU Las Cruces Museum

O’odham Himdag: Weaving a Way of Life features forty baskets from the University Museum collection representing works created by historic and contemporary Akimel O’odham (Pima) and Tohono O’odham (Papago) weavers of central and southern Arizona and northern Mexico. The O’odham Himdag, or desert people’s lifeways, encompasses cultural knowledge, values, and beliefs, all which are woven into each basket. This exhibit showcases the materials, techniques, designs, functions and several identified individual artists behind this innovative and rich ongoing tradition.

O’odham Himdag: Weaving a Way of Life is funded by a grant from the Southwest and Border Cultures Institute of NMSU. The opening reception is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 19, 2014. Refreshments will be served.

Renowned Tohono O’odham (Papago) basketweaver Margaret Acosta will be sharing her knowledge of the rich weaving traditions at the University Museum at 6pm on Tuesday, October 28th. Acosta is recognized as a preeminent culture bearer and teacher to multiple generations of weavers.

The University Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 12 noon until 4:00pm. Museum admission is free.
