LAS CRUCES – When Centennial High School opens for the first time this August, the Hawks will have varsity teams in every sport and ninth-grade teams in some sports, said LCPS Athletic Director Ernest Viramontes. CHS will add junior varsity teams for the 2013-14 school year. It will be a 4A school for all sports during its first two years, becoming 5A in 2014-15, he said.
“Because Centennial will have only freshmen, sophomores and some juniors in 2012-13, it will have fewer student athletes,” said Viramontes. “Having varsity only, or, in some cases, varsity and ninth-grade, means CHS will have bigger, more competitive teams in each sport.”
Here is a list of the teams Centennial will field in each sport for the next two years:
2012-13 2013-14
Football varsity and ninth grade varsity, junior varsity and ninth grade
Cross Country varsity only varsity only
Soccer varsity only varsity and junior varsity
Volleyball varsity and ninth grade varsity, junior varsity and ninth grade
