New Mexico Legislator Won't Run For Re-Election

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico legislator says he won't seek re-election.

Sen. Vernon Asbill announced Monday that he won't be running for a third term for the Senate District 34 seat in southeastern New Mexico.

The Carlsbad Republican has served as a teacher, coach, school principal and a school superintendent for 35 years in New Mexico as well as eight years in the state Senate.

Senate leaders say Asbill sponsored some landmark legislation.

Asbill says he's proud of his accomplishments including the public schools grading system legislation enacted last year.

Asbill says he has dedicated 43 years to the public school children of New Mexico and it's time to spend some quality time with his grandchildren.

He and his wife Kate plan to move to Artesia where their grandchildren live.
