New Mexico MainStreet Program Receives National Reaccreditation

Santa Fe, N.M. - The New Mexico Economic Development Department (NMEDD) announced today that the New Mexico MainStreet program has been reaccredited and licensed through the National Main Street Center, Inc. for 2017.

"The New Mexico MainStreet Program has again received national recognition for its innovative and high-performance economic revitalization work," said Economic Development Cabinet Secretary Designate Matt Geisel. "The comprehensive assessment of our state program highlights the impacts of the strategic and long-term investments we are making in MainStreet Districts to promote the revitalization of downtowns, encourage reinvestment in public infrastructure, support building renovations for business expansions and new start-ups, and the creation of jobs."

From 2011 to 2016, New Mexico MainStreet has supported 3,271 Net New Jobs, 752 Net New Businesses, 1063 Building Rehabilitations, and $85,320,935 in Private Reinvestment.

New Mexico MainStreet (NMMS) undergoes a biennial assessment as an integral part of the renewal of the licensing agreement between the NMEDD and Main Street America (MSA), a program of the National Main Street Center (NMSC).

"NMMS delivers some of the most comprehensive and sophisticated technical assistance services in the national network of coordinating programs. The range of services cover everything from helping entry-level communities organize to communities that are actively working on transformational projects that are generating net positive economic reinvestment and creating jobs." (Assessment Report November 2016)

New Mexico MainStreet provides professional technical services, resources, and networking opportunities to support the revitalization and redevelopment of commercial downtown districts throughout the state. The range of services covers everything from serving smaller communities with more limited resources to larger communities who are driving larger community economic development projects.

As a Main Street America™ Coordinating Program, New Mexico MainStreet is part of a national network that has been helping revitalize older and historic commercial districts for more than 35 years. Today, it is a network of more than 1,600 neighborhoods and communities, rural and urban, who share both a commitment to place and to building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development.

"New Mexico MainStreet has been providing community-based, targeted professional technical assistance to New Mexico communities for more than 30 years," said New Mexico MainStreet Director Rich Williams. "We are pleased that the state program has been reaccredited as we seek to leverage our services and resources to local affiliates to create direct positive economic impact."

A program of the New Mexico Economic Development Department, New Mexico MainStreet works throughout the state to help affiliated local organizations create an economically viable business environment while preserving cultural and historic resources. New Mexico MainStreet currently serves 28 affiliated MainStreet Districts, eight state-authorized Arts & Cultural Districts, 14 Frontier Community projects, and eight Historic Theater Initiatives.
