NM Budget Proposal Includes Money For Roads

Feb 20, 2013

New Mexico lawmakers are proposing a financing boost for road projects across the state.

A nearly $5.9 billion budget proposal heading to the House includes $20 million for the Department of Transportation for major road projects.

The measure also allows the department to spend $35 million from its fund balances for road maintenance.

The department has told lawmakers the need for road and bridge maintenance and construction far exceeds its current budget.

The agency will receive about $425 million in state revenues this year, mainly taxes on gasoline, diesel fuel, truckers and vehicle registration fees.

The department also will get slightly more than $400 million in federal money this year.

The Appropriations and Finance Committee approved the budget on Tuesday. The House is expected to debate the measure this week.
